MCP 70

TYPICAL USES

A traditional and still important use of the alloy is in tube and section bending, for which it needs to be quenched to bring it to the best condition for process; with a melting point well below 1000 C, its advantage over alternative alloys lies in the simple, low cost melt out techniques that can be used.

Although not a true eutectic, MCP 70 is satisfactory for thermal protection devices designed to yield at 700 C. Other uses include work holding and supporting, blocking of glass lenses, sheet forming dies and fusible cores.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

MCP 70 was long thought to be the eutectic of the bismuth-tin-lead-cadmium system. However, a weak first arrest in solidification at 740 C shows this not to be so: Investigations by the “last to freeze” technique suggest that the eutectic is of significantly different proportions. Melting behavior is quite complex and depends inter alia on the age and thermal history of the alloy.

In common with all alloys of low melting point, MCP 70 undergoes equilibration after solidification. The equilibration process gives rise to slow dimensional changes, which occur at rates dependent on the immediate post solidification treatment. Natural cooling is characterized by a sudden recalescence at about 550 C, which produces changes in physical properties that must be delayed by quenching before use in bending work.

CERROBEND

CERROBEND alloy is used as a filler for tube bending for tubes up to 1-3/4"; anchoring bushings in drill jigs; internal and external support of delicate parts for machining; cores for spinning; fusible mandrels in filament winding; fiberglass lamination; drop hammer and embossing dies; used as a heat transfer medium in processing plastics, chemicals. The melting temperature is 158℉(70℃). It is ideal for craft applications, model railroading and a low temperature solder in electronics. It can be melted in a double boiler. It has a rapid immediate growth max @ .00057" per inch.

CERROTRU

CERROTRU alloy is used for holding jet turbine engine blades for machining, anchoring shafts in permanent magnet rotors, locator members in aircraft assembly fixtures. It is ideal for making nests for parts in jigs and dial feed stations; cores for duplicate foundry and tracer model in profiling. It is great for molds for plaster, plastic, and encapsulating; forming sheet plastics, plastic teeth, prosthetic development and potting electronic components. It is a nice low temperature solder and used for laps in rifle barrels. It also can be used for inlays in wooden handles. Cerrotru is a eutectic alloy with a melting temperature of 281℉. It has a net expansion of .0005" per inch. CERROTRU DOES NOT CONTAIN LEAD OR CADMIUM.

CERROBASE

CERROBASE alloy is used to anchor cutlery handles, inserts in wood, metal and metal parts in glass. Make fusible spinning chucks, mandrels for electroforms, drop hammer dies, stretch form blocks, molds for plaster & plastics. It is used as a filler for tube bending of tubes over 1-3/4"; hydrodynamic forming, seamless fittings, duplicate patterns in pottery and foundry, liquid metal autoclaves, heat treating. Cerrobase is a eutectic alloy with a melting temperature of 255℉. Initial shrinkage followed by a small growth. CERROBASE DOES NOT CONTAIN CADMIUM.

CERROCAST

CERROCAST alloy parallels CERROTRU in its end uses and is also preferred by some for electroforming mandrels, lost wax pattern dies to greater dimensional accuracy and is also used for holding jet turbine engine blades while machining. Cerrotru has a Max. expansion of .0005" per inch where as Cerrocast has a shrinkage of -.0001" per inch. CERROCAST DOES NOT CONTAIN LEAD OR CADMIUM.

CERROSAFE
CERROSAFE alloy was originally made for toy soldier castings. One of its most popular uses today is casting to check gun chambers. Cerrosafe shrinks during the first 30 minutes and at the end of one hour is EXACTLY the chamber size. Some other uses are casting cavities such as threads, dies, molds, blind holes, duplicate patterns in foundry matchplate making, support work pieces while machining; spray coating wooden patterns, dental lab techniques, masks for electroplating. Cerrosafe is a non-eutectic alloy with a yield temperature of 162.5℉.

CERROMATRIX
CERROMATRIX alloy was originated by General Electric for anchoring punches in dies. It is used also to anchor non-moving parts in machinery, hold down bolts in concrete floors, locator parts in tooling docks. Used in split jaw chucks, jigs, and fixtures; metal forming dies, form blocks, joggle jaws; repair broken dies; filling blow holes in castings. Cerromatrix is a non-eutectic alloy with a yield temperature of 240℉. CERROMATRIX DOES NOT CONTAIN CADMIUM.

CERROLOW 117
CERROLOW 117 alloy is used in jigging or fixturing delicate parts for machining, dental molds, prosthetic development work, proof casting (internal measurements), fusible element in safety devices, radiopaque contrast medium in X-ray, low temperature solder and many craft applications such as castings. Cerrolow 117 is a eutectic alloy with a melting temperature of 117℉. It can be melted in a double boiler. Intitial expansion then shrinks to .0000" per inch in 30 minutes.

CERROLOW 136
CERROLOW 136 alloy is used for proof casting, testing and inspection, anchoring parts for machining (jet blades), block lenses in optical manufacturing, fusible element in fire sprinkler heads and other safety devices, fusible cores on compound cores, sealing adjustment screws. Is a low temperature solder and in hobby applications. Cerro low 136 is a eutectic alloy with a melting temperature of 136℉. Initial expansion then shrinks to .0000" per inch in one hour. CERROLOW 136 DOES NOT CONTAIN CADMIUM.

CERROSEAL 35
CERROSEAL 35 alloy is used mainly for glass-to-glass, glass-to-metal and glass-to-ceramic sealing agent as well as a "lead free" "cadmium free" low temperature solder. It is used as a seal agent to solder metal caps on glass tubes such as in pressure gages. Cerroseal 35 is a non-eutectic alloy with a yield temperature of 244℉. Cerroseal 35 is available on one pound spool @ 1/16" diameter or in small ingots.
